John Carter (of Mars)
(2012 - 132 min) ****
Plot: Based on the novel "Princess of Mars" by Edgar Rice Burroughs, this film adaptation tells the story of a Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to Mars (known as "Barsoom" by the natives), where he helps the beautiful princess Dejah Thoris save her people from annihilation, along the way making friends and enemies with some of the stranger races on the planet. [This movie was a disaster at the box office, losing around $250 million. However, many critics reviewed the film positively and faulted the very poor promotion campaign for the film, which did not give potential viewers very much, if any, clue of the connection to Burrough's popular "Barsoom" novels. Even adding "of Mars" to the title would have helped. This film deserved much better promotion and a much better box office showing! Too bad that the two originally-planned sequels will most likely never be made.]
(2012 - 124 min) ***
Plot: In the year 2093, a wealthy corporate head sends an expedition to a distant planet where he believes super beings, who may have created humans and other intelligent species, originated. The expedition, aboard a spacecraft called Prometheus, includes archeologists, other scientists, miners, and combat trained fighters. What they encounter are clues that some alien life still lives on the planet, and it soon starts attacking the explorers. But the true reason for the expedition is not revealed until the end, when it might be too late for mankind. Eventually, the story also reveals itself as a prequel to the "Alien" saga, showing where the monsters may have originated.
Star Trek Into Darkness

This take on "Star Trek" will be more popular with the younger generation accustomed to hyperactive action/adventure films than lifelong fans of the "Star Trek" franchise.
