John Carter (of Mars)
(2012 - 132 min) ****

Plot: Based on the novel "Princess of Mars" by Edgar Rice Burroughs, this film adaptation tells the story of a Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to Mars (known as "Barsoom" by the natives), where he helps the beautiful princess Dejah Thoris save her people from annihilation, along the way making friends and enemies with some of the stranger races on the planet. [This movie was a disaster at the box office, losing around $250 million. However, many critics reviewed the film positively and faulted the very poor promotion campaign for the film, which did not give potential viewers very much, if any, clue of the connection to Burrough's popular "Barsoom" novels. Even adding "of Mars" to the title would have helped. This film deserved much better promotion and a much better box office showing! Too bad that the two originally-planned sequels will most likely never be made.]

What they encounter are clues that some alien life still lives on the planet, and it soon starts attacking the explorers. Eventually, the story also reveals itself as a prequel to the "Alien" saga, showing where the monsters may have originated.
